Digitalization is a key driver for Albania’s economic growth, innovation, and regional competitiveness. By embracing digital technologies, Albania can diversify its economy, enhance access to EU and global markets, and stimulate entrepreneurship. However, the country faces significant challenges in AI adoption and the development of local expertise. These challenges include a shortage of skilled AI professionals, ongoing emigration, rising unemployment, and an education system that has yet to fully adapt to the demands of the digital era. To address these challenges, the project proposes the creation of the Albanian European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH), specifically through the establishment of the Digital Innovation Unit (DIU). The DIU will serve as a one-stop shop for companies, helping them navigate digital challenges and enhance their competitiveness. By leveraging digital technologies, the DIU will support companies in improving their business processes, products, and services. Additionally, it will offer a range of innovation services, including financial advisory, training, and skills development, all crucial for a successful digital transformation. As a pioneering hub, the Digital Innovation Unit is dedicated to accelerating digital transformation in Albania. Our mission is to empower entrepreneurs, startups, and SMEs with the tools, skills, and knowledge necessary to thrive in the digital age.
Objectives of the project
- The creation of the Albanian European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) – Digital Innovation Unit (DIU)
- Provide support to SMEs and startups in their digital transformation journey by facilitating access and implementation of ethical technologies, expertise, and experimentation through test before invest methods focusing in AI and Cybersecurity.
- Foster networking and collaboration among European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) to promote knowledge sharing, technology transfer, and access to investment opportunities.
- Address the digital skills gap in Albania by offering advanced digital skills training and development opportunities, contributing to the Digital Decade Policy Programme
- Establish a sustainable business model for the Digital Innovation Unit (DIU) that leverages the expertise and resources of the consortium partners to create tangible success stories and drive digital transformation throughout Albania.
Expected Results and Outcomes
- Comprehensive Service Provision: The DIU project aims to facilitate the adoption of at least one service by 1,000 SMEs, small enterprises, and public sector entities in Albania. Leveraging the consortium’s capacity, these entities will benefit from a range of digital innovation services designed to enhance their operations and competitiveness.
- Enhanced Digital Maturity and Market Potential: The project will significantly improve the digital maturity of participating entities, helping them unlock new market opportunities and achieve greater competitiveness in the digital landscape.
- Access to Finance and Funding Opportunities: The DIU will provide essential information on available funding opportunities within Albania. Moreover, it will offer mentorship to SMEs, small enterprises, and public entities throughout the fundraising and loan acquisition processes, enabling them to secure the necessary financial resources for digital transformation.
- Comprehensive Digital Services: The DIU will offer a variety of services, including digital maturity assessments—where 200 SMEs, small enterprises, and public sector entities will undergo in-depth analysis and evaluation. Additional services will include technology testing and experimentation, advanced training, skills development, access to finance, and the facilitation of valuable networking opportunities.
- Widespread Training and Skill Development: A total of 1,500 company staff members (with 2-3 individuals per company) will receive specialized training in advanced digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and other critical digital skills. This training will ensure that employees are well-equipped to drive digital transformation within their organizations.
