SmartWB
In this unprecedented era of increasing urbanization and the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and other global development agreements and frameworks, cities should be well-planned and well-managed. Therefore, climate-smart urbanization can be a powerful tool for sustainable development in developing countries. The broader objective of the SmartWB project is to improve the quality of higher education in the climate-smart urban development (CSUD) field, strengthen its relevance for the labor market and society, enhance relations between HEIs in WB partner countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro) and the economic and social environment by establishing a technological platform for cooperation, exchange of knowledge, experience and good practices, modernizing universities’ courses in line with EU trends and improving the level of competencies and skills of teaching staff. This broader objective fully complies with the priorities of the Capacity Building projects within the Erasmus+ program, i.e., Green Deal.
Objectives of the project
- To improve the quality of higher education in the climate-smart urban development (CSUD) field, strengthening its relevance for the labor market and society, enhancing relations between HEIs in WB partner countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro) and the economic and social environment by establishing a technological platform for cooperation, exchange of knowledge, experience and good practices, modernizing universities’ courses in line with EU trends and improving the level of competencies and skills of teaching staff.
- To initiate WB community engagement enhancement by promoting emission reduction approaches and low-carbon technologies.
- To implement an interactive web-based platform to share knowledge and know-how practical examples among project partners and stakeholders.
- To improve the competencies and skills of teaching staff in WB HEIs by acquiring best-practice examples and innovations.
- To modernize university courses in the climate-smart urban development field in collaboration with the industry sector in line with the Bologna requirements.
- To create technological preconditions for WB HEIs by procuring up-to-date equipment.
Expected Results and Outcomes
- Curricula innovation in climate-smart urban development based on green and energy efficiency realized by business-academia cooperation.
- Students’ internships as a part of the modernized curricula will be implemented at the companies which previously signed the agreements with the WB partners.
- For the involvement of the non-academic sector and the best practice sharing, the interactive web-based platform will be developed and used focusing on technical areas such as urban planning systems, construction conditions for private developers, links between land use planning and infrastructure development, land management, and informal construction.
Project Activities
- Analyze the current status of climate-smart urban development (CSUD) and identify key urban development issues in the WB region.
- Review and evaluate EU initiatives, policies, and existing CSUD curricula in EU Member States and third countries.
- Build the capacity of WB Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in CSUD through modernized courses and partnerships with the industry.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive training program for student internships and theme-based training for teaching staff in CSUD.
- Establish a technological platform for CSUD innovation and experience sharing.
- Implement modernized CSUD courses, facilitate student internships, and share best practices.
- Ensure project quality through regular monitoring, self-evaluation of courses, and external evaluation.
