Abstract
The image of the lawyer in the public’s perception has incessantly oscillated betweentwo extremes. An idealistic vision has regarded the lawyer as a peacemaker whose mission is to discourage litigation and promote compromises.
On the other endof the spectrum, the lawyer frequently came to be seen as a self-interested agentresponsible for exacerbating disputes and preventing deals or making settlements costlier
