Is the European University of Tirana accredited?
Yes, UET is the only private university in Albania that has accredited third cycle (PhD) degree programs.

How many credits do I need to apply for the PhD Program?
Applying for the Doctoral Program requires at least 300 credits.

Can I apply for a PhD program if I have an old System Degree?
Yes, you can apply because the Diploma of the old system is equivalent, in the current Bologna system, to a Bachelor’s Degree + a Master of Science Degree.

What are the Degrees that allow me to apply for a PhD Program?
You can apply for a PhD Program if you have one:

  • 4-year system diploma;
  • Master of Science Degree, 120 credits, or a degree obtained outside of Albania which is accredited by the Ministry of Education as such;
  • Second Level Masters, 60 credits, or a diploma obtained outside of Albania which is accredited by the Ministry of Education as such;
  • Advanced Post-Graduate Studies;

Can I apply with a Professional Master’s Degree?
If you have completed your 4-year old system and have a Professional Master’s Degree, then you can apply. If you are part of the Bologna system, ie you have a BA Degree and a Professional Master’s Degree, then this does not entitle you to apply for a third level (PhD) degree.

How many academic years does the PhD Program last?

The PhD Program lasts 3 academic years if you have:

  • Degree of the old system which is equivalent to Master of Science.
  • Master of Science Degree, 120 credits, or a degree obtained outside of Albania which is accredited by the Ministry of Education as such.

The PhD Program lasts 2 academic years if you have one of these degrees:

  • Second Level Master, 60 credits, or a diploma obtained outside of Albania which is accredited by the Ministry of Education as such.
  • In-depth studies after university.

What is the average grade for admission to the PhD Program?
The average grade should be 8 (eight) or higher.

Can a foreign student apply to the PhD Program?
Yes a foreign student can apply, but must have equivalented diplomas from the Ministry of Education in Albania.

Is it permissible to choose a doctorate in a profile other than the one in which I did my previous studies?
PhD studies do not require you to follow the same course or profile as you did in your studies. You can choose a different direction or profile. However, keep in mind that in this case you should follow the 3 year program regardless of the type of Diploma you have.

How many credits does the first theoretical year have?
The first full year has 60 credits.

How many subjects does the first theoretical year have?
The theoretical first year has 5 subjects, 4 of which are common to all profiles within a PhD Program, and 1 subject is specific to the chosen profile.

What is Comprehensive Examination (CE)?
After completing the first year and receiving a passing grade (5 and above) in all subjects, each student is subject to a Comprehensive Examination which is worth 10 credits. Students are provided with a complete list of books for the preparation of this exam.

What other obligations does a PhD candidate have during doctoral studies?
The doctorate must attend at least 3 scientific conferences and publish at least 3 scientific articles. At least two of the conferences should be international conferences and should take place in European Union countries or member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Also, at least two of the articles must be published in international journals published in European Union countries or members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The doctorate cannot enter the final defense of the dissertation without fulfilling these conditions.

Is English language certification a condition?
English language should be protected by international evidence of foreign language (IELTS, TOEFL etc.) at B2 level and above. The doctorate cannot enter the final defense of the dissertation without fulfilling this condition.

Who designates the lead professor?
The lead professor is designated by the Doctoral School based on the topic of the student’s choice. In the case of specific topics, the doctorate may propose to the Doctoral School a professor in the field, and then the Board of Professors makes the final decision.

Must be the lead professor from the European University of Tirana?
The leader is usually selected by the internal staff of the university but may also be one of the external lecturers engaged in the teaching process or personality in the academic field. In exceptional cases it may be foreign.

Can a dissertation be written in English?
Yes it can be written in English, but the reasons for this need to be stated in advance and the Doctoral School approval must be obtained.
